Variants, not switches
Sex is a variant of a species here, never a global toggle over one body. This atlas ships Adult male and Adult female. A structure absent from a variant is absent from it everywhere — graph, search, relationships and manifest — so asking for it returns nothing rather than an empty shell, which is the correct answer.
