Dog anatomy atlas
Leumas holds 4214 cited structures for Canis lupus familiaris, across 12 systems and 17324 typed relationships. Every one of them is free to read and carries its source.
What the dog atlas covers
4214 structures grouped into 12 systems and 13 regions, with 8 physiology processes over the same graph. Coverage follows what the source ontology asserts rather than what a textbook chapter would list, so the gaps are visible here rather than filled in.
Variants, not switches
Sex is a variant of a species here, never a global toggle over one body. This atlas ships Medium, female, Medium, male, Small, female, Small, male, Large, female and Large, male. A structure absent from a variant is absent from it everywhere — graph, search, relationships and manifest — so asking for it returns nothing rather than an empty shell, which is the correct answer.
The systems
Cardiovascular, Digestive, Endocrine, Integumentary, Lymphatic & immune, Muscular, Nervous, Reproductive, Respiratory, Sensory, Skeletal, Urinary.
Where it came from
Uberon multi-species anatomy ontology (Mungall et al.), CC BY 4.0. Version 2026-06-19, licence CC-BY-4.0.
- Cardiovascular: Heart, arteries, veins and the blood they move.
- Digestive: The gut tube and the glands that feed into it — short and simple next to a herbivore's.
- Endocrine: The glands that signal through the bloodstream.
- Integumentary: Skin, coat, foot pads and claws — the boundary.
- Lymphatic & immune: Lymph nodes, vessels and the organs of immune defence.
- Muscular: Skeletal muscle and the tendons that transmit its force.
- Nervous: Brain, spinal cord and the peripheral nerves.
- Reproductive: The organs of reproduction. Substantially variant-specific.
- Respiratory: The airway from nose to alveolus. In the dog it is also the primary organ of smell and the only effective route of cooling.
- Sensory: Nose, ear, eye, vibrissae and the other sense organs.
- Skeletal: Bones, cartilage and the joints between them — the frame the body is built on.
- Urinary: Kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra.
Questions
How many structures are in the dog atlas?
4214, each with its own citation. That number comes from the dataset itself and changes when a new import lands.
Is the whole body drawn in 3D?
No, and it does not need to be. The body here is a graph; a mesh is one representation hung off a node of it. Almost every structure has no geometry and is still fully searchable, traversable and citable.
